Individuals (time qualifiers and charity runners) must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Boston Marathon. The marathon’s entrants are divided into the following age groups: 18-34 years and 5-year groups thereafter (e.g. 35-39 years, 40-44 years etc)
Today, approximately 30,000 runners (women and men) participate in the annual Boston Marathon. Data from the 2015 Boston marathon shows that the majority of entrants were male (54%). About 80% and 20% of the marathon’s runners are time qualifiers and charity runners respectively.

The Boston Marathon takes place in April. However, time qualifiers must register for the Boston Marathon mid-September. The registration for the marathon takes up to 7-10 days. In order to be allowed to participate in the Boston Marathon time qualifiers must appease a few requirements.

Charity runners don’t go through the standard registration procedure, however, they are required to spend/ donate a set amount to charity to partake in the event. Statistics show that 2,585 individuals participated in the charity program in the 2015 Boston Marathon.
How to Prepare for the Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon is an unusual and challenging marathon. While running the Boston Marathon, your course will take you through 8 beautiful cities and towns! You will have to overcome various challenges (series of climbs and significant downhills) during the course. So make sure you’re well prepared for the marathon! Your marathon training program should include a training set focused on uphill and downhill running.
Runners who want to participate in the Boston Marathon have to choose an effective training program and start preparing for the marathon quite a length in advance. Luckily, a lot of Boston marathon-specific training programs are available for runners today. Many runners prefer to develop their own marathon training plans, which is great; so long as you understand the difficulties in store.
